I have been following this project for a while but have just started to play
with it. I have just been playing with the ultra simple models that have
come with some of the great tutorials there are for Papervision. The
question I have is has anybody used www.righthemisphere.com product "Deep
Exploration CAD" for conversion into compatible Collada files? It seems to
convert and edit just about every file format out there.
Also some of the work that have seen the use baked on textures are very
impressive. http://dev.startaconversation.com/experiments/PV3D/3DTV/ comes
to mind. I am not sure if this would apply, but the Deep Exploration CAD
seems to have some very handy tools for UV mapping.

If you look at the sites tutorials and demos you can see that the product
also has some very good polygon reduction tools that really can shrink the
size of files with very little loss of quality.

I admit that I am just starting with papervision so it will be a while
before I should be worrying about lighting and Shading but if anybody wants
me to try something for a model that they are trying to work with just let
me know.
By the way this is a fantastic project! Kudos to all that are contributing.
