Guys, i can completely understand what you're referring to - i wasn't really
aware how things would look on the list at the time, all i wanted to do was
help the people asking questions.
I'm afraid i don't agree with you about this not being the 'place' for
discussing different engines. I would argue that a discussion such as the
one you are bringing up has no 'place' on the mailing list, but if you are
determined to answer to this on-list, i feel compelled to do the same in the
confines of the thread.
I would bet the vast majority of people on this list are here because they
want to do 3d in flash, and Papervision is the only engine they've heard of.
This is a situation of circumstance, and really nothing for anyone to get
too arrogant about.
I often read posts on this list that are asking for specific features that
Papervision does not support. As an active member of the community, i fell
compelled to help these people by offering a solution that is simple and
effective in its execution. If that solution happens to be one found in
Away3d, i fail to see why it shouldn't be brought up. If nothing else, it
alerts the Papervison dev team that people are asking for these features,
and solution could possibly be adapted from the Away3d implementation in
order to include in the next revision of Papervision. After all, we are both
open source engines and have both taken code from each other in the past.
Why should that be seen as a problem on the Papervision mailing list?
At the end of the day, i think we need to ask ourselves why we are doing
this. Why are Papervision and Away3d open source projects? My reason would
be because i want to offer others an entry point into the world of 3d in
Flash, so that they can produce the best online 3d experiences. That reason
does not include exclusionism, arrogance or nepotism. Those attributes are
usually reserved for a commercial enterprise, which Papervision should never
be about.
If you still disagree with my assessment, then i suggest we take this
discussion off list. I fail to see why anyone here wants to witness other
people's dirty laundry, and it would be my preferred course of action.
