I tend to agree with Zeh and would add;
I would not be surprised if Papervision3d as2 has been used on more comercial projects than sandy or papervision3d as3, when ever I have had an issue I found that if I dig down and used lower level classes the engine was very stable. I also found Zeh tweener class very usefull!
I am sure sandy is also really good.

For AS2 I wouldn't use papervision as I dont believe it actually has a stable as2 release, whereas Sandy does. http://www.flashsandy.org/

Added something on players and actionscipt versions for newbies and people wanting to know if Papervision would be suitable for a project. Feel free to edit remove or whatever, just felt that these are some aspects not covered (see below).
I am interested in finding somewhere on the Wiki for AS2 specific papervision, since there are a lot of comercial projects that still require flash 8 and it would be usefull to collate as2 papervision experiances code and examples in one area, I did not find a suitable area to put such a topic???
But it would be usefull to even have an AS2 specific mailing list since I hope to use pv3d on my second comercial app soon.
Anyway change made--
Which flavor of actionscript should I use with papervision, and does it support AS1 and AS2?
