Hi Peter,
I have used Maya, studiomax but only briefly. I do benefit more from a total newbie in the fact that I understand 3 dimensional space within these apps.
Why am I looking at papervision?
Before I started with flash 7 years ago I spent a year messing around with 3d, though I didn't have the understanding of 3d and scripting that I do have now.
After seeing http://carlosulloa.com/ it gave me some fresh excitement so lightweight and in flash plus my boss wet his pants when I showed it to him.
There are so many different area's to flash and webdevelopment now and it is pretty hard to choose were to go next when you have mastered or gained a good knowledge of 'x'
So I thought this might be something good to have a go at.

Hi, I would highly suggest using another 3d software to get aquainted with the world of 3D. I doubt Papervision3d will teach you ANYTHING useful - unless you know how to use it...
Bryce will not hel you understand 3D either - although I is very useful! You made need to understand basic concepts by fiddling around with a "regualr" 3d program like MAYA, 3dsmax, lightwave, etc etc..
So, have you used any 3D progroms before? Just getting started in 3D is a totally different question than getting started in Papervision3D..I hope I can help you find some answers..

Basically you have to do it all in code. You need to assign materials to
planes and use camera to show scenes of planes, hack the examples till you
get the idea, personally I would start without importing models from
external classes and then when you get the basic ideas then use the examples
that import models at run time. If you can work with the AS3 since it is
more finished than the AS2.
But I am bit of newbie too!
