You know what I have noticed a similar effect when using system fonts. Typically system fonts will disappear when being used in conjunction with dynamic masks or alpha tweens. When you apply a filter to the movieclip containing the font, say a Blur with 0,0 as it's values, then suddenly the text will always appear.

Subject: [Papervision3D] TextField with filter removes artifacts from text
Why hello thar,
Did anyone notice that when you add a filter to a textfield within a movieclip and map that as your texture, that the text will render just fine instead of showing artifacts where edges intersect the text? I just found that out when messing with a mouseover effect: when applying a simple dropshadow to the text, the artifacts suddenly didn't show. So then I added a blurfilter over the textfield in the mouseout version with a blur of 0, and voila, no more artifacts!
Perhaps it works because of herbs!
