I don't think the overhead with the DAE parsing is that big an issue 
really as opposed to a f**ked up half functioning clone. If you just 
load the collada file into memory as an xml object and then thereafter, 
use this to create new DAE instances.

As far as I know, cloning is the only way to do it, however, when 
cloning a
DAE the animations attached to it are not cloned, so based on your
description this would be an issue for you as well.
