The extra step is actually helpful in that it strips all unneccesary 
data in dae file so the resulting x3c document (which is also xml), will 
be somewhat smaller than the original dae file. I agree with you that it 
would be frikkin wonderful to be able to work with  animated blender 
models with the dae class too.

Dmitri Sviridov, the man behind cast3d, has also been fixing a lot of 
bugs in the blender collada exporter, and while I haven't had a chance 
to the following yet, it would be interesting to see how nicely the new 
collada files, exported from this updated python script, play with the 
dae class. Dmitri also tells me that he has been in contact with the 
blender core dev team and that there are plans to fix other bugs in the 
the collada exporter, but these are only likely after november.
