Sorry Alan,
32 bits you said!
I have just been walking on the hills (Ennerdale, Cumbria, Lake
District, UK) and I am pretty exhausted.
So, you work 32 bits at a time, one integer for each pixel.
You would imagine that the alignment would work 'right off the bat', as
they say.
I will have to go and think again.
